HISTORY

The history of AMG began in the 1960s, when two engineers, Hans Werner Aufrecht and Erhard Melcher, worked in the development department of the Daimler-Benz Group, where they prepared the racing engine for the Mercedes 300 SE. In 1967, they founded “AMG”, a racing engine engineering office based in a former mill in Burgstall, a village near Großaspach. The engines modified there soon aroused the interest of private racing teams.

From the 1970s until the end of the 1990s, AMG built up an exemplary reputation in motorsport. In 1973, 40 people were working at AMG… Several years of rapid growth followed, during which AMG equipped more and more Mercedes models with high-performance technology. In 1997, AMG sold 800 units… 11,500 units were sold in 2000!

A cooperation agreement was signed in 1990. In 1999, DaimlerChrysler AG became AMG’s main shareholder, and then its sole shareholder in 2005. Iconic models followed: the SLS AMG in 2009, the A45 AMG in 2013, the AMG GT in 2014…
